Rain on your wedding day: how to embrace it for beautiful photos

Rain on your wedding day: how to embrace it for beautiful photos

Your photos can be magical when you add a bit of rain

We all dream of sunshine on our wedding day, but let’s be honest, we live in the UK, and the weather doesn’t always play ball! The good news? Rain on your wedding day photos can create some of the most romantic, emotional and fun images. As a Nuneaton wedding photographer, I’ve captured some truly breathtaking rainy wedding photos when couples decided to simply embrace the moment.

So rather than worrying about the forecast, here’s how to make the most of the rain and turn every drop into photo magic.

Bring the brollies: turning rain into romance ☂️

If there’s one accessory you should always have on standby, it’s a couple of umbrellas. Clear or white ones work beautifully, they don’t cast shadows or add odd colour tones, and they let the light through perfectly.

Whether it’s a romantic walk in the rain or a playful moment with your bridal party, umbrellas add character, movement and fun. I always keep a few in the boot of my car just in case, so even if the heavens open, you’ll be covered (literally!). Umbrellas also make rain on your wedding day photos look effortlessly elegant.

Cosy indoor wedding photos in the rain 🕯️

Rainy days are perfect for capturing those quiet, heartfelt moments you might otherwise rush through. Think of your bridal prep, the steam from the kettle, laughter echoing through the room, and soft window light while you’re getting ready.

Later in the day, I love photographing those warm, candid indoor moments: guests chatting by the bar, toasting with glasses of fizz, or kids giggling inside while rain falls softly outside. These scenes create natural storytelling, the kind of wedding photos in the rain that feel authentic and timeless.

Dramatic backdrops for rain on your wedding day photos 🌧️✨

Rain can add an incredible cinematic atmosphere to your gallery. The tiny droplets catch the light beautifully, especially if I use a flash behind you, creating that magical “sparkle in the rain” look.

Dark clouds and misty skies also add mood and depth, transforming your photos into something truly one of a kind. Some of my most striking rainy wedding photos were taken when couples embraced those moody skies and trusted the creative process.

Golden reflections ✨

When the rain finally eases, puddles and wet paths turn into natural mirrors, giving you reflections that make your photos stand out. I love finding little spots, maybe outside your venue or along a cobbled path, where we can use the post-rain light for something truly unique.

A pop of colour from your bouquet or your dress against those reflections makes for unforgettable rain on your wedding day photos. If you love soft, glowing light, you’ll adore my post on

Relax and enjoy your rainy wedding photos 💕

Above all, the key to beautiful rain on your wedding day photos is to go with the flow. You can’t control the weather, but you can control your mindset., and relaxed couples always have the best photos. Laugh when your veil catches a raindrop, dance under an umbrella, or sneak away for a quick kiss in the drizzle.

Your joy and connection are what truly matter. I’ll handle the lighting, angles and timing to make sure the rain only adds to your story. And as The Knot points out, rain on your wedding day is actually seen as a sign of good luck, symbolising cleansing, renewal and everlasting love.

Final thoughts

Your wedding day is about love, laughter and connection, not the forecast. With the right photographer (and maybe a few umbrellas!), even a rainy day can create the most breath-taking, emotional images you’ll treasure forever.
